I Thought I Had Won

Gabriel is determined to live up to the reputation of the typical two year old. I hear "NOOOOOO" a lot now and he definitely is determined to do what he wants, when he wants gleefully ignoring my directions, warnings, pleas, etc. And his temper is fierce. I know lots of kids have tempers but he really gets both mentally and physically furious in 1.2 seconds. It is incredible to watch his little brain whirling around trying to figure out how to get/do/see what he wants and to circumvent me.

Tonight we battled a lot. After surviving dinner and bath time we moved on to the bedtime routine. He got furious that I would not let him squeeze the tube of Little Bear Toddler Tooth Paste directly into his mouth. Then he didn't want his pajamas on. I fought and won that battle, did story time, Goodnight Moon and then sang our goodnight song, You Are My Sunshine. I laid him in his crib, he smiled sweetly at me, said, "Nigh Nigh!" and I shut his door. Didn't hear a peep out of him after that.

I went in to check on him a bit ago and there he was, lying happily in his crib sound asleep SANS pajamas. He must have plotted and waited me out and then unzipped and got out of them as soon as he was able. Now I have no idea what to do - wake him up to put them back on? Hope he manages to stay under the blanket? Let him just get cold and realize his mistake and deal with him mad, freezing and crying at 2 a.m. Ugh. I've got to give him credit for beating me, though!

Halloween 2009

The Halloween festivities were over a week long for our family. Last weekend Rachael, Brien and Lily came up and we did the pumpkin patch together (with that awful corn maze!). A few days earlier Ella has a field trip with her class to a different pumpkin patch and Gabriel and I attended with her. They had a blast at both places. Ella then had a Halloween party in her class on Tuesday and her Ama attended with her and watched her play games, eat junk food and walk in a Halloween costume parade. Then on Friday I took the children to the local community center for a morning of Halloween crafts and storytelling. We wrapped up Halloween on the actual day by pumpkin carving, going to a party at my in law's club for the kids (the dancing and limbo pics below are from there) followed by trick or treating. Whew!

Pumpkin Patch

Rachael, Brien and Lily headed up here on Sunday to visit and go to the pumpkin patch with us. The best shots I got are above. The kids had so much fun that for the most part all the pics are blurry as they are running by in motion.

October Pics

Not feeling 100%, hanging out in his playpen watching Thomas:
Furious with me this morning because I would not let him eat a plate of syrup for breakfast:
Our little tooth fairy - she is SO excited for Halloween to arrive!

Me, 27 weeks pregnant with Baby #3:

The End

Gabriel may have finally weaned himself. He's been asking less and less and was really only nursing around 5:30 a.m. when he woke up. The last two days he hasn't asked, has just wanted a quick cuddle and a cup of milk and has gone back to bed until 7:30 a.m. This is perfect timing, I knew deep down that I had to push weaning by the end of this month because I don't want to tandem nurse, he is almost 2 and I knew if we kept going until my milk came back in again I would never get him finished. And I don't want him to feel pushed to the side just because a new baby has arrived. I feel so much lighter and easier about this weaning process with him. With Ella I did end up weaning her when Hannah died because I was pregnant, I was away from her for a couple days in a row and she was 25 months old. But it was abrupt and not her idea at all. This is better because Gabriel has pretty much led the way with various forms of distraction offered by Bob and me when he has asked and he seems relatively unaffected.

As I've said before on this blog, I know lots of women nurse their children and everyone has a different experience - some hate it, some do it just for the health benefits for the first year and have no feeling one way or the other, some love it but can never produce enough milk. Even through the hard times of supply issues, infections, teething, etc. on the whole it has bee a very positive experience for me. I get aggravated when people suggest I breastfeed for myself - give me a break! For my children it has been not only a source of nutrition but a huge source of comfort sort of like well loved teddy bear is for other children and I've tried to be flexible and follow their lead up until age 2, which is really the upper end of my own personal limits for keeping that relationship intact.

Anyway, it is a huge milestone in Gabriel's life so I knew I needed to blog about it. He has turned into such a funny little guy, one who loves swimming, trains and planes and reading books with his mama. He is desperately trying to talk and his attempts are so adorable at times. He has moved into phrases now from single words which is progress yet most of the time I am the only one who can tell what he is saying or wants. Bob is pretty good and deciphering too, I just have the advantage of being with him all the time. It is also funny to me that Gabriel detests mushrooms, which happens to be one of Bob, Ella and my favorite foods. He is a good eater for the most part but he can spot and pick out a mushroom in just about anything I offer him!

Last Day in WDW

It's arrived, the last day! We started out by heading to Downtown Disney for Ella's princess make over appointment at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at 9 a.m. Let me tell you, Disney is a well oiled, money making machine, and this little girl salon was no exception. We arrived, were ushered to a place to change into the princess costume that we brought along with us (way too expensive to do the entire make over package with dress up and photos included) and after that we met our "godmother" who proceeded to whip Ella into princess material in no time. She handed Ella a brochure with her hair choices, Ella selected the style she wanted and then boom, boom, boom, she was "made up" in no time flat. First a coat of nail polish, then make up (Ella of course chose blue and purple for her eyes from the palate offered), then more nail polish, then the hair transformation began. I am a hairstylist and I was very curious as to how they were going to get Ella's hair up in the bun style that she chose - it isn't long enough in the back to get it up on top of her head in a ponytail. Well, I'll tell you. Ella walked out of that salon with more product in her hair than I have ever, in years of doing hair, haver ever put on a single client's head. There were huge glops of gel, followed by more spray gel as the smoothing out took place, followed by hair spray and spray glitter, followed by more spray gel and a final whoosh of hair spray. All day long Ella kept questioning me about why her hair was so hard! And then once the pony on top was on place it was ratted and teased mercilessly and then slightly smoothed out on the top to make the top knot. The whole thing fell out around lunchtime and looked more like a high pony tail/bun but as I explained to Bob, this whole thing was not at all about the end result but about the experience. She felt pampered and like a real princess and also felt so beautiful that whatever the result I would do it again in a heartbeat just to see how happy she was walking out of there. Gabriel, on the other hand, looked perplexed most of the time Ella was being worked on. He clearly wasn't very impressed!

As we were checking out of the salon the manager of the World of Disney store (apparently the largest Disney store on the planet) approached us to see if Ella would like to do their grand opening that morning. Each day they ask one child to pull back the rope and announce, "The World of Disney is now open!". We were in the right place at the right time and so Ella got picked. She was pretty shy and wanted me to "help" her. It was a cute experience though and it made her feel even more special. We meandered the store after that and Ella chose to spend her Disney Dollars on Pumba and Timone stuffed animals. She thinks it is hysterical that Pumba has uncontrollable gas and thought it would be funny to have him as a toy friend. We found a little stuffed Mickey for Gabriel and bought a couple packs of pencils for her classmates as well. Then we moved on to the Lego store (Bob took more photos here than anywhere else on the trip and kept saying, "Brien will want to see these too", as an excuse for photographing every single model!) and then left Downtown Disney for the Magic Kingdom.

We planned yesterday for this to be a light, casual day, to cap off our trip. On the spur of the moment we left for the park instead of the hotel because it was a cool 83 degrees at 10 a.m. We didn't make it back to our hotel until 7:30 p.m. with two melting, overtired children in tow. Gabriel was so tired this afternoon that he managed to nap through the afternoon parade and let me tell you, that is a LOUD event. The park wasn't very crowded today and now that we have been everywhere and Ella knew what her favorite rides were we just popped around looking for short wait times, eating here and there and just enjoying the scenery. It was a more relaxed day even though we were there for more hours than any other day spent in the parks. In the last 3 hours Ella decided (on her own) that she was ready to tackle Big Thunder Railroad and Splash Mountain. She loved BTR so much that Bob took her 3 times in a row (the wait time for the line was 5 or so minutes, believe it or not!) and then on to Splash Mountain which she also loved. She certainly didn't get my disinterest/dislike of amusement park rides in her genetic code.

On the whole it has been a really great trip, especially for Ella. I suspect Gabriel will sleep a lot in the car on the way home, he has napped every day but it is never really a "real" nap unless they are laying down and quiet in my book and these have all been on the go. He has made up for it a bit with longer night sleep but still I don't think we will take another child so young to Disney in the future. It is just too hard on the younger sibling to be that off schedule for so many days. He has been a trooper though. Disney is amazing at training their employees (everyone is *always* chipper and friendly) and their park exceptionally clean. I can only imagine the organization behind the scenes that it takes to keep it all moving along at such a beat without a misstep. The parades, special events, the management of the rides, the thoughtfulness into making the visit for young families easier, the constant selection of things to see, do, hear and smell - it is all really amazing. We realized while we were there that there were a lot of cast members (employees) who had a college listed on their name badge. I asked about it today to young man in a store and he said that Disney provides internships of sorts to college students who are studying for relatable degrees (business, hospitality and management) and even provides business classes while they are working there. Disney also employs more people of various nationalities than I have ever seen. It is pretty impressive. I give Disney two thumbs up for just plain good management and focus on making their guests as comfortable as possible. I am sure if we stayed within the resort property I would have had even more good things to say.

Animal Kingdom

We went back to Magic Kingdom yesterday and it was very fun. Our pace was slower than our first day in that park and we redid a few things in Fantasyland that Ella especially liked and also made our way through Ariel's grotto, to meet and get her autograph, which was the longest line I've stood in yet. Today we finally snagged Pocohontas' autograph so that is it for the princesses - we've got them all and I am SO GLAD. The mad dashing to get in line is very fun for Ella and very stressful for Bob and me who are trying to coordinate who will hang with Gabriel, where the camera and autograph book are, etc. Unless the spot is specifically for meeting and greeting a character, like Ariel's Grotto or The Hall of Fame in Toontown, then you may dash and be told that the line is closed and the character will be moving on shortly. We missed Peter Pan and Pluto because of this - oh well.

I am rung out. My belly feels sore all the time and I know it is from constantly juggling bags and Gabriel and walking all day long. Animal Kingdom was supposed to be a lighter day but it was so hot today that I think I may feel worse this evening than I have yet. The kids are clearly getting more and more tired and 5 days is PLENTY for a pregnant mama and a 4 year old and a 1 year old. Daddy is hanging in there pretty well but he is definitely tired too. I think the constant managing and handling of the kids is just really exhausting in this type of environment and with me down and out at times he is taking the lion's share in the parks. It is hot, crowded and kids can slip off in an instant and you just have to be vigilant both physically and mentally every single second. Disney World is really fun but I certainly wouldn't rank it as relaxing!

Animal Kingdom was fine, not my favorite park but still enjoyable. A lot of the exhibits are tailored for people who probably don't get the chance to see wild animals very often. We have been fortunate to live near zoos and so the kids go pretty often, at least quarterly. I am not suggesting it isn't cool to see a lion pride from a safari jeep vehicle, but if we hadn't done it I wouldn't have felt like I'd really missed out on a Disney experience. Many of the rides in Animal Kingdom are too old for both kids and being pregnant and not a roller coaster person as well, we just sort of meandered the park. The highlight was definitely the Lion King show - wow.

Tomorrow Ella has her make over appointment at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique for hair, nails and make up which for sucker parents and a substantial fee is supposed to give her the ultimate princess experience. We are going to the boutique in Downtown Disney, which is like a huge outdoor mall tailored to DW vacationers. I know Bob is really looking forward to going to the huge Lego store and Ella can hardly wait to spend her Disney Dollars (my mom gave her some money for the trip to spend) in the biggest Disney store in the entire world after she is beautified. After that we will head back to the Magic Kingdom one last time and Ella will do the few things we haven't gotten to yet, the car track in Tomorrowland and Tom Sawyer's Island. We plan on doing Downtown Disney in the morning, coming back to the hotel for lunch and nap time and then heading into the park from 3-7 for a grand finale tour. We have tickets through Friday for the parks but we think we are pretty much exhausted at this point and will probably just leave and begin heading home to VA on Friday morning. That will give Bob and me all day Sunday at home to recuperate and get the kids wound down a bit before our normal schedule resumes Monday morning. Let me reiterate, 5 days is PLENTY with two small children in hot weather at amusement parks!

Epcot

We are tired, tired people. And we have 3 days to go! Today we toured Epcot and I have to admit that I much prefer it to the Magic Kingdom. For children there is no question about which is more fun, MK wins hands down. But I am not much of a rides/amusement park person and MK is just packed and a constant stream of sensory overload along with hordes of small, energetic and occasionally unhappy children. Don't get me wrong, the MK is fun and we will spend the majority of our time there this trip but if I were only pleasing myself I would do a few days in Epcot and one day in the MK. Epcot, in contrast, was much more spread out and had lots of things for both the kids and Bob and I to enjoy.

We started the morning in the Future World to get all the rides out of the way that (according to the guidebook) get jam-packed later on in the day. We went in with a plan, knowing that Bob wanted to do a couple rides (Mission: Space and Test Track) that weren't going to work for the kids, so we split up after he and Ella rode Soarin' in The Land. Gabriel, Ella and I went on The Land boat ride and Journey to Imagination and then met back up with him and we headed over to Nemo. We only did the ride, the kids have been to the Baltimore Aquarium recently and we wanted to do other things.

After that we went to the World Showcase and we slowly made our way around from about noon until 7 p.m. when we finally made it out again. The Food and Wine Festival is going on right now and the place is just stuffed with vendors from all sorts of countries offering for sale small portions of food and drink for $2.50-$5.00 and we sampled the afternoon away. Epcot has a program called Kidcot that runs throughout the World Showcase in which the kids pick up a craft and as they visit each country they add to it. Ella got a mask and it has paper charms added to it symbolizing the country it came from. It was a good way to get her interacting with the people in each country (who are all from the country being represented) and kept her interested in continuing to move around.

Epcot seems to be the best place for quick meet and greets with characters. We saw so many today I am not even sure I can remember them all. We skipped the Mickey Character Spot knowing we will meet that crew in Animal Kingdom but Ella did meet and get autographs from Aurora (again), Belle (again), Mulan, Jasmine, Mary Poppins, Tigger and Pooh, Marie from the Aristocats (she had no idea who this was but still wanted to get in line!), and Snow White. The Beast was with Belle for a while but Ella thought he was way too scary to meet so we just admired him from afar. Tomorrow we are going to attempt meeting Ariel in her grotto and Pochontas wherever she hangs out so we can have the full roster of princesses in our book. The fun thing about meeting the characters, especially the princesses, is that Ella is simply starstruck by their presence. She absolutely believes it is the real princess or character and can't believe her good luck in getting to meet them all. For this alone I am so glad we threw this trip together because I know all too soon that magic of belief is going to be gone and then the experience, while fun, will just never be the same again. Gabriel, on the other hand, can't figure out why he is supposed to be interested in giant stuffed animals and people in costumes and just wants nothing to do with it. After attempting with Pooh and Tigger we just separated for character lines, either Bob or me hanging out with him while the other one of us took Ella.

Tomorrow is the Magic Kingdom again and Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party for Ella. She is beyond excited to be attending that alone, on a date, with her Daddy. Gabriel and I will have a much needed light day, only being in the Magic Kingdom from about 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then we will head back to our hotel to relax for the rest of the day while Ella and Bob will rest up and head back over around 6 for the Halloween Party. I am looking forward to a slower afternoon, in the pool, napping, etc. with my baby. We are both really tired and need a break.

The last thing to mention (so I don't forget myself!) is that I haven't felt the baby move much the last couple days probably because I am so busy while awake that I am not noticing and so deeply asleep at night that I am not noticing. While in Japan in the World Showcase today we watched some Japanese drummers and the noise and vibrations got her moving around so much I could hardly believe it! It was really funny, it was like she woke up and was trying to keep beat right along with them.
